What is the ECO4 Scheme?
The ECO4 Scheme (Energy Company Obligation) is a UK Government initiative designed to help households improve their energy efficiency while reducing fuel poverty. Running from 2022 to 2026, ECO4 represents the fourth phase of the scheme and focuses on supporting low-income and vulnerable households by funding essential home energy improvements.
Unlike earlier versions of ECO, ECO4 takes a whole-house approach. This means instead of funding one-off measures, the scheme looks at the entire property and recommends multiple upgrades to significantly improve the home’s EPC rating.
What the ECO4 Scheme aims to do
ECO4 has four main goals:
• Reduce energy bills for households struggling with high heating costs
• Cut carbon emissions by upgrading older, inefficient homes
• Improve home comfort and warmth for vulnerable residents
• Upgrade the UK’s housing stock, especially properties rated E, F, or G
Who the scheme is for
ECO4 is aimed at:
• Low-income households
• People receiving certain government benefits
• Homeowners with poor EPC ratings
• Homeowners or tenants who qualify through Local Authority Flex (LA Flex) by having a qualifying medical condition
Many households that don’t receive benefits can still qualify through LA Flex, depending on their local council’s criteria.
What upgrades can be funded?
ECO4 can cover a wide range of measures based on what your home needs most. These include:
• Loft insulation
• Cavity or internal wall insulation
• Room-in-roof insulation
• Air Source Heat Pumps
• Solar PV panels
• Gas boiler replacement (in specific cases)
• Smart heating controls
• First Time Central Heating
Sometimes a package of upgrades is recommended for the best energy savings.
Benefits of ECO4
Households typically see:
• Lower heating and electricity bills
• A warmer, more comfortable home
• Fewer cold drafts and damp issues
• Improved EPC rating
• Reduced carbon footprint
• Increased property value
Why ECO4 matters
