Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are one of the most efficient ways to heat a home. Instead of generating heat by burning fuel, they extract warmth from the outside air—even in cold weather—and transfer it into your home. This makes them a low-carbon, low-cost alternative to traditional gas boilers.

ASHPs are particularly effective in homes with lower EPC ratings that need long-term, sustainable improvements. They can provide consistent, comfortable heating and significantly reduce dependency on gas, helping lower both energy bills and carbon emissions.

How ASHPs work

Air Source Heat Pumps work like a reverse refrigerator:

• They absorb heat from the outside air
• Compress it to increase the temperature
• Deliver that heat into your radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water system

Because they use electricity rather than gas, they can dramatically reduce carbon emissions, especially when paired with renewable energy like Solar PV.

ASHPs under the ECO4 scheme

ASHPs may be installed under ECO4 when:

• The home has a low EPC rating
• The existing heating system is old or inefficient
• The property is suitable for heat pump installation
• A whole-house assessment shows this upgrade provides the best efficiency improvement

Not every home will be suitable for a heat pump, which is why a surveyor will assess heat loss levels, radiator sizes, insulation quality, and overall property condition before approval.

Benefits of installing an Air Source Heat Pump

• Lower annual heating costs
• Reduced carbon footprint
• More stable, consistent home temperatures
• Increased property value
• Works efficiently year-round
• Provides future-proof, modern heating

When combined with insulation and other ECO4-funded improvements, ASHPs can transform a cold, inefficient property into a warm, energy-efficient home.

Who installs the ASHP?

All installations are carried out by certified, TrustMark-accredited installers, ensuring the system is fitted safely, efficiently, and to government standards.

For eligible households, an Air Source Heat Pump can offer a powerful, long-term upgrade to comfort, energy performance, and running costs—fully funded through the ECO4 scheme where suitable.
